Heat Pump Radiators Upgrade in Walsall: Do Your Radiators Need Changing?
Radiator Upgrades for Heat Pumps in Walsall: stay warm, cut waste and plan costs clearly with a free survey and written quote. Call for a quote.
If you’re thinking about replacing a gas, oil, LPG or electric system, one question comes up quickly: will my existing radiators work with a heat pump? Often the answer is “some of them”, and that’s what a heat pump radiators upgrade is about. Eco Air Source Heat Pump Installer is based in Walsall, and we check every radiator in your home during a free survey before recommending anything. A heat pump warms water to a lower temperature than a boiler, so rooms with smaller radiators may need a larger one to stay comfortable. You get a written quote that shows which radiators need changing and which can stay. Call 01922 302461 and speak to someone local, open 7 days, 9am to 7pm.
Why Heat Pumps and Radiators Need to Work Together
A boiler typically heats water to a high temperature and pushes it round small radiators. A heat pump works differently: it runs at a gentler, steadier temperature. Heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026), and the lower flow temperature is part of how they achieve that.
The catch is that a radiator giving out less heat per square centimetre needs more surface area to warm the same room. That can mean swapping a single panel for a double panel, choosing a taller or longer model, or fitting a fan-assisted radiator in a tricky spot. Pipework is also checked, because narrow pipes can restrict flow to larger radiators.
Not every radiator changes. Many Walsall homes with decent insulation keep several of their existing ones. The only way to know is a room-by-room heat loss check, which we do at the survey.
Homes That Usually Need Changes
- Older terraces and semis with solid walls or limited loft insulation, where rooms lose heat quickly.
- Homes with small, single-panel radiators, common where a combi boiler was fitted years ago.
- Extended properties, where a new kitchen or conservatory sits on pipework sized for the original layout.
- Bathrooms and north-facing bedrooms, which often need extra output to hold temperature.
- Landlords who want tenants comfortable without complaints about cold rooms.
Newer, well-insulated homes often need fewer changes. Underfloor heating, where already fitted, usually suits a heat pump well.
From First Call to Finished Job
- Call or request a survey. Ring 01922 302461 or use the form. Calls are the quickest route.
- Free home survey. We visit, measure each room, note radiator sizes, check pipework and look at insulation and glazing.
- Written quote. You receive a clear document listing which radiators stay, which change, and why. Nothing is bundled into a vague total.
- Agreeing the plan. You choose your radiator styles and finishes, and we confirm dates. There’s no pressure to decide on the day.
- Installation. Old radiators are drained and removed, new ones fitted, pipework altered where needed, and the system is flushed and balanced.
- Handover. We show you how to adjust the controls and leave you with the paperwork.
You’re also welcome to visit our Walsall premises (WS1) to see radiator options in person before you commit.
What You Gain
Comfort. Correctly sized radiators let the heat pump run at its gentle, steady temperature without rooms lagging behind.
Efficiency. Right-sized emitters let the system work at lower temperatures, which is where its efficiency comes from. Heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
Running costs you can plan around. On standard tariffs electricity is nearly four times more expensive than gas, so a heat pump can cost slightly more to run than a new gas or oil boiler. A heat pump time-of-use tariff can bring running costs below a gas boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). Well-matched radiators help you get the best from either tariff.
A tidy, planned job. Doing the radiators properly at the outset avoids returning later to fix cold rooms.
What Affects the Price
Radiator work is usually priced as part of the wider installation, and the cost depends on how many radiators change, their size and finish, and how much pipework needs altering. Floor type and access also play a part.
For context on the heat pump itself: the Energy Saving Trust puts the typical cost of installing an air source heat pump in the UK at around £12,000 (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). Checkatrade gives a range of £3,000 to £15,000 for supply and installation, not including extras such as upgrading radiators (Checkatrade cost guide, 2026). So radiators are an extra to plan for, and we itemise them in your written quote.
Grants. Homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). You must own the property and be replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system (GOV.UK, 2026). We aren’t MCS certified, so if you want the grant, we refer you to our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies on your behalf. If you don’t need the grant, we install the heat pump ourselves.
What the survey involves. Typically a walk through every room, radiator measurements, a look at pipework, the cylinder space and the outdoor unit position. It’s free, and there’s no obligation.
Regulations. Most heat pump installations are permitted development, so no planning permission is needed, but check with your local planning department if you live in a listed building or conservation area (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). If a new cylinder is needed, unvented hot water systems fall under Building Regulations Part G, which covers hot water safety.
Questions Homeowners Ask
Will I need new radiators with a heat pump?
Not always. Some rooms keep their current radiators, while others need larger ones to give the same warmth at a lower water temperature. It depends on insulation, room size and existing radiator output. We check each room during the free survey and list the changes in your written quote.
Can I keep my existing pipework?
Often, yes. Existing pipework can usually stay if it’s in good condition and large enough to carry the flow. Narrow or heavily restricted pipes may need replacing in places. We check this on the survey and tell you plainly which sections, if any, need work.
Do I need a hot water cylinder?
Usually, yes. A heat pump normally heats a stored cylinder rather than water on demand. A cylinder can usually fit in any cupboard measuring at least 80cm x 80cm (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). We’ll check your space at the survey.
Can I get the £7,500 grant if I change my radiators?
Radiator changes don’t stop you applying, but the grant has rules. You must own the property and be replacing oil, gas, electric or LPG heating (GOV.UK, 2026). The grant comes through our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies for you.
Are fan-assisted radiators a good option?
They can be, where wall space is tight or a room needs more output than a standard panel can give. They’re a practical option for bathrooms or small bedrooms. We’ll only suggest them where they make sense, and your quote will say why.
