Will You Need New Radiators for a Heat Pump? — specialist guide for UK homeowners considering radiator upgrades for heat pumps

Heat Pump Radiators Upgrade: Will You Need New Radiators?

Will you need new radiators for a heat pump? Learn how rooms are assessed, what costs extra and when to keep yours, plus Radiator Upgrades for Heat Pumps.

Many homeowners in Walsall worry that fitting a heat pump means ripping out every radiator in the house. Usually it doesn’t, but some rooms may need a change. At Eco Air Source Heat Pump Installer, we’re based in WS1, open 7 days, 9am–7pm, and we offer a free home survey. This guide explains how a heat pump radiators upgrade is decided, room by room, so you know what to expect before you ask for a written quote. Call 01922 302461 if you’d rather talk it through.

Why heat pumps and radiators need to work together

A heat pump sends water round your radiators at a lower temperature than a gas or oil boiler does. Because the water is cooler, a radiator gives off less heat at any moment, so it has to run for longer or have more surface area to warm a room properly.

That is the reason the question comes up at all. The pump itself is efficient (the Energy Saving Trust says heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler, Energy Saving Trust, 2026), but that efficiency depends on running the water as cool as the house allows. Radiators that are too small force the system to work harder.

How to tell if your existing radiators will cope

Radiators that already heat a room comfortably, even on a cold day, are good candidates to keep. Here are the things we check on a survey:

  • Room size and heat loss. We calculate how much heat each room needs, using wall construction, windows, loft insulation and floor type.
  • Radiator size. Older single-panel radiators are the ones most often swapped. A double-panel or larger model gives more output at lower temperatures.
  • Rooms that never quite warm up. If a bedroom has always struggled with a boiler, it will struggle more with a heat pump unless something changes.
  • Pipework. Existing pipes sometimes need adjusting so water flows properly at lower temperatures.

Many homes end up with a mix: most radiators stay, and a handful are replaced, usually in bathrooms, living rooms or rooms with lots of glass.

Alternatives to replacing every radiator

A full set of new radiators is rarely the only route. Improving insulation reduces how much heat each room needs, which can let existing radiators cope. Draught-proofing and loft top-ups are straightforward places to start.

Where a radiator is too small, swapping it for a bigger one on the same wall is often enough. Fan-assisted radiators are another option for tight spaces, and underfloor heating can suit extensions or ground-floor renovations. Our Radiator Upgrades for Heat Pumps page sets out the options we fit.

What it costs and where grants fit in

Radiator work is priced separately from the heat pump. The Checkatrade cost guide puts supply and installation of an air source heat pump at between £3,000 and £15,000 on average, not including extras such as upgrading radiators (Checkatrade, 2026). Your written quote will list radiator changes as their own line, so you can see exactly what they add.

If you want the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, available to homes in England and Wales (Energy Saving Trust, 2026), that comes through our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies for the grant on your behalf. GOV.UK says the grant is taken off the amount you pay and shown on your quotation and invoice (GOV.UK, 2026). If you don’t need the grant, we install the heat pump ourselves. Either way, the radiator question is settled at the survey stage, with no pressure to commit.

Key takeaways

  • Most homes keep some radiators and replace only the ones that can’t heat their room at lower water temperatures.
  • Heat loss in each room, not the age of the radiator, decides what needs changing.
  • Insulation and draught-proofing can reduce how much needs replacing.
  • Radiator work is a separate line on your quote, so costs are clear before you decide.
  • Grant-funded installs go through our MCS-certified partner.
